Foundations

How I approach complex product work

Five beliefs that shape how I work with teams before we design interfaces.

01

Understand Before Designing

Understanding relationships before interfaces.

Before a single screen exists, there is a structure. I map the objects in a product, the relationships between them, and the capabilities they expose — long before deciding what a button should look like.

“If this object disappeared tomorrow, what would break?”

02

Design for Trust

Building experiences people understand, verify, and confidently use.

AI changes the contract between a person and a product. Users are no longer just operating software — they are deciding whether to believe it.

“What would someone need to verify before trusting this?”

03

Organize Complexity

Transforming ambiguity into shared understanding.

Most hard product problems are not design problems yet — they are clarity problems. Too many truths, held by too many people, with no shared picture.

“What truth exists only in someone's head?”

04

Connect Perspectives

Connecting strategy, engineering constraints, and human behavior into one coherent direction.

A product direction is only real when business, engineering, and human needs point the same way. My job is to find the version of the product where those forces reinforce instead of fight each other.

“What would engineering, business and users all agree is true?”

05

Design Within Constraints

Using time, tech, and organizational reality as design material.

Constraints are not the enemy of good design — they are its raw material. Deadlines, legacy systems, and competing priorities define the shape of what is actually possible.

“If we couldn't build everything, what creates the most clarity?”

“The hardest design problems are rarely interface problems. They are understanding problems.”

I don't begin with screens. I begin with conversations, systems, objects, questions, and constraints. Good products emerge from shared understanding. The interface is the consequence of understanding the problem well.
